Abstract
This study examined teachers' digital competence and students' academic performance in selected public secondary schools in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The study was guided by three objectives: to determine the level of digital competence among secondary school teachers in the selected schools, to examine the relationship between teachers' digital competence and students' academic performance, and to identify the challenges militating against the development of teachers' digital competence. The study adopted a correlational research design. The population comprised 340 teachers in five purposively selected public secondary schools, from which a sample size of 184 was determined using the Taro Yamane formula. A structured questionnaire titled “Teachers' Digital Competence Scale (TDCS)”, validated by experts and tested for reliability using Cronbach's Alpha (α = 0.85), was used to measure teachers' digital competence across four domains: basic ICT operation skills, use of digital teaching tools and resources, digital content creation and assessment, and online communication and digital citizenship. Students' academic performance was obtained from school records as the mean examination score of one class taught by each sampled teacher in the immediate past academic term. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics (frequency counts, percentages and mean scores) and inferential statistics (Pearson Product Moment Correlation, independent samples t-test and one-way Analysis of Variance) at the 0.05 level of significance, with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26. Findings revealed that the overall level of digital competence among teachers in the selected schools was moderate (grand mean = 3.02), with basic ICT operation skills rated highest and digital content creation/assessment skills rated lowest. A statistically significant positive relationship was found between teachers' digital competence and students' academic performance (r = 0.554, p < 0.05). Furthermore, students taught by teachers with high digital competence had significantly higher mean performance scores (M = 68.4, SD = 9.2) than those taught by teachers with low digital competence (M = 59.7, SD = 10.5), t(182) = 6.13, p < 0.05. However, no statistically significant difference was found in teachers' digital competence based on years of teaching experience (F = 2.15, p > 0.05). Inadequate ICT infrastructure and internet connectivity, insufficient training opportunities, high workload, inadequate funding and epileptic power supply were identified as the major challenges confronting the development of teachers' digital competence. The study concluded that teachers' digital competence has a significant positive influence on students' academic performance, but that this competence remains at a moderate level constrained by infrastructural, training and funding deficits. It was recommended, among others, that government and school authorities should institute regular, structured ICT training programmes for teachers, improve school ICT infrastructure, and incorporate digital competence assessment into teacher performance appraisal.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The teacher remains the single most influential in-school factor affecting students' academic performance, and the competencies teachers bring to the classroom significantly shape the quality of instruction and, ultimately, learning outcomes (Hattie, 2009). In the twenty-first century, digital competence has emerged as one of the most critical of these competencies, given the increasing integration of information and communication technology (ICT) into virtually every aspect of teaching and learning, from lesson delivery and content creation to assessment and communication with students and parents (Redecker, 2017).
Digital competence, broadly understood, refers to the confident, critical and effective use of digital technologies for learning, work and communication, encompassing skills ranging from basic computer operation to the pedagogically sound integration of digital tools into subject-specific instruction (UNESCO, 2018). The European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu) identifies several domains of teacher digital competence, including professional engagement, digital resources, teaching and learning, assessment, empowering learners, and facilitating learners' digital competence (Redecker, 2017). A growing body of international literature suggests that teachers with higher levels of digital competence are better able to design engaging, differentiated and technology-enhanced learning experiences that improve student engagement and academic performance (Tondeur et al., 2012).
In Nigeria, the integration of ICT into secondary education has progressed unevenly. While government policy documents, including the National Policy on Education and the National ICT for Education Policy, articulate ambitious goals for ICT integration in schools, actual implementation at the classroom level remains constrained by infrastructural deficits, inadequate teacher training, and inconsistent access to digital devices and connectivity, particularly in public secondary schools (Adeyemi & Olaleye, 2021). Consequently, the level of digital competence among Nigerian secondary school teachers, and its actual effect on students' academic performance, remains an important but insufficiently investigated empirical question, particularly at the level of individual local government areas and school clusters.
Uyo Local Government Area, as the administrative and educational hub of Akwa Ibom State, hosts a relatively high concentration of public secondary schools with varying levels of ICT infrastructure and teacher capacity. This makes it a suitable context for examining the relationship between teachers' digital competence and students' academic performance, an inquiry that can generate useful, context-specific evidence to guide teacher capacity-building efforts. It is against this background that this study examines teachers' digital competence and students' academic performance in selected public secondary schools in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite policy pronouncements on ICT integration in Nigerian secondary education, students' academic performance in public secondary schools, including those in Uyo Local Government Area, continues to be a source of concern, as reflected in persistently modest performance in internal examinations and public examinations such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). While multiple factors contribute to this state of affairs, the extent to which teachers' digital competence – or the lack thereof – contributes to this performance gap has not been sufficiently investigated empirically within the local context.
Many secondary school teachers, particularly in public schools, continue to rely almost exclusively on traditional, chalk-and-talk instructional methods, with limited integration of digital tools and resources into lesson delivery, content creation or assessment (Chinelo & Nwachukwu, 2020). Where digital competence has been examined in the Nigerian context, studies have tended to focus on teachers' general perception or attitude towards ICT rather than empirically linking specific, measurable levels of digital competence to actual student academic performance outcomes. This creates a gap in empirical evidence needed to justify and guide investment in teacher digital competence development. It is this gap that the present study seeks to address.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between teachers' digital competence and students' academic performance in selected public secondary schools in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The specific objectives are to:
1. determine the level of digital competence among secondary school teachers in the selected schools;
2. examine the relationship between teachers' digital competence and students' academic performance;
3. compare the academic performance of students taught by teachers with high digital competence and those taught by teachers with low digital competence; and
4. identify the challenges militating against the development of teachers' digital competence in the selected schools.
1.4 Research Questions
The study is guided by the following research questions:

1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study:

10. Ho2: There is no significant difference in the academic performance of students taught by teachers with high digital competence and those taught by teachers with low digital competence.
11. Ho3: There is no significant difference in teachers' digital competence based on years of teaching experience.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant in several respects. Theoretically, it contributes to the application of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework and Diffusion of Innovation Theory within the specific context of Nigerian secondary education, extending the empirical base for understanding how teacher digital competence relates to measurable student outcomes.
Practically, the findings will provide school authorities, the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Education, and relevant teacher training institutions with empirical evidence on the current level of teachers' digital competence and its actual relationship with student performance, thereby guiding the design of targeted, evidence-based teacher capacity-building programmes. The study will also benefit teachers by highlighting specific competence domains requiring development, and will serve as a useful reference for researchers, students and policymakers interested in educational technology, teacher effectiveness and school improvement.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is conceptually restricted to the examination of teachers' digital competence and its relationship with students' academic performance. Geographically, the study is delimited to five purposively selected public secondary schools in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The study covers teachers across various subjects and cadres within these schools, together with the academic performance records of one class taught by each sampled teacher in the immediately preceding academic term. Data collection was undertaken between [MONTH] and [MONTH], 2026.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
This study encountered a number of limitations typical of educational research conducted within a school setting. First, students' academic performance is influenced by multiple factors beyond teachers' digital competence, including students' individual ability, home background and school resources, which the correlational design of this study cannot fully isolate. Second, the study relied on teachers' self-reported digital competence rather than direct observation of classroom practice, which may introduce an element of social desirability bias. Third, resource and time constraints limited the study to five schools out of the numerous public secondary schools in Uyo Local Government Area, which may affect the generalisability of the findings to the wider population of schools in the area. These limitations notwithstanding, appropriate methodological safeguards were applied to minimise their effect on the validity of the findings.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
Digital Competence:
Refers to a teacher's demonstrated ability to confidently and effectively use digital technologies for basic ICT operations, teaching and learning, digital content creation and assessment, and online communication, as measured by the Teachers' Digital Competence Scale used in this study.
Students' Academic Performance:
Refers to the mean examination score obtained by students in a given class in their most recent term examination, as recorded in official school records.
High/Low Digital Competence Teachers:
Refers to teachers whose composite digital competence scores fall above (high) or below (low) the median score of all sampled teachers.
ICT (Information and Communication Technology):
Refers to the range of technological tools and resources, including computers, the internet, digital projectors and educational software, used to create, store, process, transmit and manage information in the teaching-learning process.
Public Secondary School:
Refers to a government-owned and government-funded secondary school in Akwa Ibom State offering the Junior and/or Senior Secondary School curriculum
